چکیده
Abstract Key message This study presents the first attempt to quantify how thigmomorphogenetic syndrome is involved in Fagus sylvatica L. tree growth responses thinning. An experimental design preventing mechanosensing half of trees demonstrated that radial distribution roots and along stem under strong biomechanical control. Context Studies on mechanosensitive control real forest conditions are rare those existing date all deal with conifer species. In current context global changes, it important disentangle different biotic abiotic factors affect growth. Aims Whereas changes after thinning usually interpreted as decreased competition for resources, this investigates importance controls inside tree. Methods an even-aged beech stand, 40 pole-sized (size class at thinning) were selected, plot was thinned and, within each sub-plot (thinned unthinned), guy-wired order remove mechanical stimulations lower part stem. Four years later, felled volume increment, ring width height, largest structural measured. The effect stimulation two treatments unthinned) assessed. Results Removal increment well root but did not axial When strain removed, height changed drastically ice-cream cone-like distribution, indicating a shape. Conclusion allocation Mechanical explain more than 50% stimulated by thinning, whatever indicator. A further challenge better understand cambial cells perceive strains during integrate into process-based tree-growth modeling.

Predicting red heartwood formation in beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.)
Beech-forests (Fagus sylvatica L.) represent the natural vegetation cover for the majority of sites in Germany. Although coniferous forests actually dominate, beech is the most important among the deciduous tree-species in Germany, when considering the area and the economics. While the wood of the younger beech normally shows a whitish colour (white beech), the timber of older beech may form co...
متن کاملStudies on European beech (Fagus sylvatica L
Colour parameters of European beech were measured using CIELab system. 103 logs from 87 trees in 9 sites were cut into boards to study the variations of wood colour parameters. Both site and tree effect on colour were observed. Patterns of red heartwood occurrence were defined. When excepting red heartwood there was still a highly significant effect of site and tree; differences remained after ...
متن کاملTemperature dependency of bark photosynthesis in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and birch (Betula pendula Roth.) trees.
Temperature dependencies of stem dark respiration (R(d)) and light-driven bark photosynthesis (A(max)) of two temperate tree species (Fagus sylvatica and Betula pendula) were investigated to estimate their probable influence on stem carbon balance. Stem R(d) was found to increase exponentially with increasing temperatures, whereas A(max) levelled off or decreased at the highest temperatures cho...
متن کاملGrowth of adult Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) under free-air ozone fumigation.
This study attempted to detect the impact of ozone on adult trees of Norway spruce ( Picea abies [L.] Karst.) and European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) in an experimental mixed stand in Southern Bavaria, Germany. The aim was to examine whether there is a decrease in growth when trees are exposed to higher than atmospheric concentrations of ozone. This exposure was put into effect using a free-ai...
متن کاملParametric identification of a functional-structural tree growth model and application to beech trees (Fagus sylvatica)
Functional-structural models provide detailed representations of tree growth and their application to forestry seems full of prospects. However, due to the complexity of tree architecture, parametric identification of such models remains a critical issue. We present the GreenLab approach for modeling tree growth. It simulates tree plasticity in response to changes of their internal level of tro...
